I'm not sure why I rated this at 3 stars last time... This is a regularly watched movie in our house. (Probably more frequently watched than Ready Player One, even). Emma Stone is pretty fun in it. Emma Thompson is amazing -- she should be a villain in every movie. (But she's also so good as the wife in Love Actually and as Trelawny in HP, and as Elinor in Sense & Sensibility... nevermind, she should just be in every movie full stop.) The real hero of this movie are the stunning costumes, though.

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical 2022
I've seen this a few times now, but was glad that one of the kids put it on again. Tim Minchin's lyrics are superb. This does fall into the category of a "stompy" (I'm not sure if I'm the only one who calls these kinds of pop-and-lock, stomp-dancing musicals, "stompies," but I hope it catches on...), but I'll let that pass partly because the kids in this are so freaking amazing at dancing. (The final sequence is especially wild). Emma Thompson as Trunchbull is brilliant and invisible. This is a beautiful ode to love and kindness and to the deep value of kids.

Dune: Part Two 2024
It is a testament to how masterful this movie is that, despite some of the most astonishing visuals that I have ever seen in a movie (the black and white sequence is incredible, the production design throughout, the cinematography, etc.), sound design, soundtrack (Hans Zimmer has created some great new motifs here), and VFX, the thing that stands out most to me is the characters.
Timothée was fantastic -- and he was riding the brilliant, terrible arc of his character…
