In the spirit of transparency, this may be getting a bump for pulling from so many of my pet interests: Bond, Industry, obsessive Fassbender, mysterious Blanchett, marital dramas, jazzy Soderberghian denouements...

Speaking of denouements, this tight little spy play has the rare distinction of actually earning the Agatha Christie comp. Not only are its many tangles pulled taut by a thematically resonant through line, but there are also no wasted movements; every thread plays its part in the tapestry, knowingly…

Decided to watch the sexy, 90-minute Fassbender/Soderbergh spy thriller people aren’t talking about before I watch the one they are. One of the many great things about Sodey is that you can tell how smart he is just from watching his movies; he conveys more with a simple cut than most directors could with an entire monologue. One of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

    Production design: A
    Cinematography: B
    Music: B
    Literally everything else: Fffffffffff

The Writing is awful, the acting is unironically The Room-level bad, the plot is nonsensical, the pacing is somehow glacially slow considering it contains twisted ballet dancers, evil henchmen, and a coven of witches.

This film did not make me feel, it did not make me think, and it did not hold my attention. It was kind of like Lynch if…

Earnest, honest, and sweet—but never saccharine, because of the first two things. Incredibly endearing performance from Richard Farnsworth that made me miss all of my grandpas, here and above. Wonderful Badalamenti score per usual, and it really is amazing how well this based on a true story script by someone else fits Lynch’s sensibilities like a glove. Beautiful, beautiful movie.
