If there were one, Ron Fricke would be the patron saint of cinematography. Like no one else, his images—along with the way he contextualizes them through the edit—uplift and point toward the Divine. He has a knack for capturing the mystifying breath and essence of life, Baraka, in all the myriad places it resides. Whether it be in the grandeur, harmony, and chaos of nature or in the portrait of another person, truly seeing their humanity and dignity (that they…

The most consistently arresting, overwhelming audio-visual experience like ever😂 You either gotta take drugs or lock-the-fuck-in because it’s somewhat exhausting in that way. That notion and the one-note sensationalism of it all are the only things that really hold it back for me. It is honestly the most exceptional time-lapse, large-format, and aerial photography I’ve seen in my entire life though. Inspired me to think and feel most of the ideas and emotions I love most to think and feel,…

Cannot get behind casting Giancarlo as Will Smith’s father😂 Unfortunately, the rapid, episodic editing feels listless, like a hodgepodge of brief scenes that immediately fall out of memory. I don’t think the mixture of film and digital footage meshes well. I understand it’s all important for Ali’s characterization, but everything Malcolm X related was just better in Malcolm X (I mean come on, it’s fucking Denzel). On a related note, where I felt Malcolm X jump off the…

Pacino is COOKING in this. So refreshing to see him as a straight and narrow good guy. Plummer’s pretty damn solid as well. Could take or leave Crowe’s performance for the most part honestly. First act could’ve been a little stronger; on the whole this probably didn’t need to be 155 minutes, you can feel it at times. That said, those lulls and weak spots become more palatable when you actively work to appreciate their basis in true…

Rating pending, but it’s on the 3.5/4⭐️ fence. The only big, notable qualm I have is against these few sporadic instances of really erratic, wonky, and/or jarring editing (including, most especially, the climactic raid). Otherwise, Mann’s colorful neon stylization is on full, gorgeous display; the procedure of the police work is realistic and cool to watch (testing samples of hair, fingerprints, etc.); and we explore the dark, tragic duality of killer and detective. Very good stuff. Very 80s.…

You’ve wrapped yourself in the Union Jack, the butcher’s apron.

ALWAYS here for punching back against British Imperialism, and the Irish highlands are gorgeous.
