If there were one, Ron Fricke would be the patron saint of cinematography. Like no one else, his images—along with the way he contextualizes them through the edit—uplift and point toward the Divine. He has a knack for capturing the mystifying breath and essence of life, Baraka, in all the myriad places it resides. Whether it be in the grandeur, harmony, and chaos of nature or in the portrait of another person, truly seeing their humanity and dignity (that they…

The most consistently arresting, overwhelming audio-visual experience like ever😂 You either gotta take drugs or lock-the-fuck-in because it’s somewhat exhausting in that way. That notion and the rather one-note intensity of it all are the only things that really hold it back for me. It is honestly the most exceptional time-lapse, large-format, and aerial photography I’ve seen in my entire life though. Inspired me to think and feel most of the ideas and emotions I love most to think and…

Soundtrack was so aggressively good cannot be overstated. Holy third act! So goofy to see De Niro in a Tarantino flick—perfectly cast though. LOVE Pam and Bridget. They were so cunt.

    Mann-athon #11

Mille Miglia was dope. No other parts of the movie ever really broke through for me though. Penelope is HER…Shailene not so much. Very high 3⭐️.

And so concludes my Michael Mann movie marathon; only one I missed was his sophomore feature The Keep which is notorious for being impossible to find/watch. Had a good time with it and I look forward to doing more “director deep dives” with some other greats who have multiple films on my watchlist. So stay tuned👀

And this is why we rewatch…

The most provocative, thematically interesting, and visually ~stunning~ installment in the franchise, with some iconic Adam Driver memes to boot. The REDS in here are so fucking gorgeous, even better than (might be destroying a friendship with this take, sorry not sorry Jake) Black Christmas. Rian Johnson is honestly doing the Lord’s work here. Handed the reins to the largest and most established IP literally ever, he takes us somewhere completely fresh and challenges…

First act was exhausting oh my goodness that editing was horrible. Vito is utterly insufferable. Why did they insist on saying every single line of dialogue basically twice over for no apparent reason?! Hated the framing device. The production design, costuming, and the cinematography are solid. I was with it the whole time, but it was also kinda a slog. I don’t really get the point of the gimmick. Middle of the road De Niro performance. It’s close to a 1.5⭐️ but I didn’t hate it THAT much in the theater.
