“People like to think of themselves as points moving through time, but I think it is probably the opposite. We are stationary, and time passes through us.”
I think this film is brilliant. It says a lot in 135 minutes, maybe even a little too much. Some themes are overt and some undertones. You feel as if you are moving through time, reality, and fantasy alongside the female protagonist. Yet, in many ways you’re more ‘stationary’. Jake’s emotional stagnance, hopelessness, and life story move through you. As we see, time leads to his eventual surrender; where death, in many ways, seems more hopeful than the mundane.
