With a strong lead performance, great sound design and creative cinematography Smile is an effective horror film.
I find the commentary on mental health a little questionable though. Comparable to The Babadook (a metaphor for grief and depression) I feel this went for a horror cliché which seems to suggest you cannot deal with trauma and live you life. The Babadook suggests you can most past and live with mental health issues, even those relating to trauma.

Doesn't feel like the usual film the Oscars go for so maybe things are changing, which is a great thing.
This is a film I've wanted to see for years, but never had the chance so as soon as I saw it come up on Netflix I jumped at the chance to watch it. It's one of those films that everyone talks about and quotes, so much so that I knew the quotes before they happened. I can see why everyone love it so much though. Funny and sweet it's such an enjoyable film. For me to recommend the film seems redundant, but I'm going to anyway. A perfect Friday night film.
