I keep thinking about this film. The mixed availability is such a shame - it deserves a high-grade transfer, not to be left to YouTube users - because we don't want to pay for Leonard Cohen, I suppose? The upload is nice, but I think the frame rate is off, and the quality is, to be generous, "VHS". Watched in the BFI, it was extraordinary. We immediately went in search of "spaghetti in tomato sauce" and got it at a restaurant described in a Time Out article as one of London's "needed" "mediocre restaurants". Wonderful experience of cinema.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
At the end, Mickey has that dream - of the woman reprinting the autocrat, telling him "this is what you want". Shouldn't have been a dream - cut all the liberal fantasy about good triumphing over evil, end on the brutal restoration of fascist leadership. Wasted opportunity to leave the audience in a good, productive daze.
Great bit of blockbuster, otherwise.
Really beautiful, fluid, hybrid documentary. The liveness of the creative process is integrated in such an effective way, it feels like there is no distance between the observations on process and what is actually being made. I hope this gets picked up for a broad audience.
