  A few years ago I booked tickets to a 3D screening of Dial M for Murder. I noticed that I was the only person wearing 3D glasses but I assumed the others were waiting for the movie to start to put theirs on. When the film eventually began, I was shocked to learn that I’d walked into the wrong screening. Well, I have already missed the start of Dial M for Murder, I thought, so I may as well stay and watch Frances Ha. It was the worst movie going decision I have ever made.

  Maniac takes a fascinating premise about dream states and somehow manages to be more meandering and boring than listening to someone describe their dream. It aimed for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but instead imitated Black Mirror at its worst, in that the technology driving the story simply takes on whatever features the writers deemed necessary to advance the plot. It is science fiction at its laziest and most underwhelming.
