This movie is so bipolar. The lead actors are great, but the villains are terrible. The body cam and handheld shots are cool, but the call of duty first person shootouts are terrible. The banter and side plots are well written, but the main story is so cheesy and uninteresting. I agree wholeheartedly with the overarching sentiment that a better director makes this movie great. My boy Jake and Michael Pena sure tried their absolute hardest to make it so.

This movie frustrates me a little bit. The acting performances are top notch, the movie looks great, and it's got a powerful story it's trying to tell. However, the main character, who takes up many different names throughout, is so uninteresting to me. All we know is that he's black, gay, quiet, and gets bullied. That's his entire character, and it never really changes. So much of this movie is trying to interpret what the writers and the actors are…

I know I'm a year late, but this getting snubbed in favor of Maestro is absolutely criminal. Really powerful movie with some fantastic performances across the board, bonus points for Tom Sawyer. All I'm saying is my brothers and I would be unstoppable in the ring.
