It’s shockingly tame on a formal level. Wim Wenders exquisitely captures the surreality of the American West, in all its glowing resplendence. But while beautiful, the emphasis on the neon, bright lights, and austere landscapes feels unsubstantiated in the script. This is just a really complete film. What I loved most about it was that while the main characters were simply ungovernable, so was the film itself. It felt like the two leads could do anything at any time, and they did, but so did the materiality of the film itself, as it shifted from black and white to color and many other visual effects in between. This formal and narrative parallel was clutch, and it gets to the essence…
