I really do believe that at its core, this film is about the effects that grief has on oneself. It manifests in the paths Ernes follows, the way in which he treats himself and the idols he ends up subscribing too.
Religion, environmentalism & extremism merely serve as the vehicle(s) to outfit and carry Ernst, a man who does not see himself as worthy of being on this planet. Thank God for Mary.
