I didn’t enjoy watching it, but that was probably the point.

Shanghai Triad 1995
Zhang seems to be more interested in the sets and costumes than the story. Granted we are supposed to be seeing the world through the boy’s eyes but the bumpkin does not see much. You see characters but don’t really get to know them. The final 30 minutes is really where the action is and the reveal is well shot, but it too needlessly drags outs.

Collateral 2004
I’m glad I rewatched this. First time since when it first came out, I think. It’s much better than I remembered, although I think I was biased at the time because this was an early digital video experiment. At the time the digital quality, compared to film, made it look amateurish. But in retrospect, its cinematography has sweep and scope. Yes, there are some minor issues with blowouts and poor motion capture, but Mann takes advantage of digital photography strengths…

The Crying Game 1992
If someone described this plot to you, you’d think that there was no way that all of these different elements would work together, but, for most of the movie, it does work, until the end, at which it seems that Neil Jordan couldn’t quite figure out how to land the thing. However, much props for the attempt.
