    Such a weird movie...

Got the most mediocre prime time chinese melodrama series of a plot, yet at certain moments did shine in surprise with some truly unconventional and somewhat experimental framings and movements. Those handheld tracking shots captured such a breathing gritty early 2000s China.

Zhou Xun is phenomenal as always tho

1960s, when the world is still young and give a fuck.

Layers. Throw away the tight timeline and sequential logic, drove purely by rhythms and emotions of the soundtrack, or soundscape? Intense amount of sound designs here that construct a slice of history in such vivid approachable form while also carry on a certain degree of satire. Never lose its seriousness though, certain moments of employing the separation of sound and picture are truly devastating and breathtaking.

    Can never hear…

Lynne Ramsay's work is all about vibes and I'm not vibing so hard with this one. The anti genre approach of such an established and constructed genre did throw me off a little bit, and those tiny moments and intimate emotions that she always masterfully captures and presents are ice cold this time due to the nature of the story.
Even with that being said still absolutely floored by her direction as always. The sound design reached a even higher level this time, fking insane. Equally insane is Johnny Greenwood's score, together created a monstrous soundscape. Wish I could see this in a theater 😭

Ah new go to comfort movie.

Find the debate on whether the film idealized and/or beautified working class life interesting. It for sure is not realism work, but does it have to be? Or whether using working class life as device for more abstract messages that naturally shy away from the nasty and gritty part of reality maintains to be a form of exploitation?
