The Woman in the Yard 2025
Firmly in the shadow of The Babadook. But that titular ghoul would never heavy-handedly announce himself as a manifestation of the lead character’s grief the way our lady does toward the end of this movie - he had some couth! He respected his audience!
Speaking of the ending, it goes to a place that so many Grief Monster movies go. I was ready to be pissed off, but it’s at least ambiguous enough (or just poorly executed?) to be up to interpretation. And Danielle Deadwyler is always compelling, so I’m gonna be generous.
I actually did find it mildly creepy at times.

Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Women in Hollywood
I don’t think there’s anything especially revelatory here, but it’s nice to see such a range of voices and generations included. From Whoopi Goldberg and Gabby Sidibe standing in their beauty and unwavering self-worth, to Halle and Angela reflecting on their Oscar history, there is an urgency to it. Honestly, it could’ve been much longer.

Heartbreakers 1984
A quintessential "These Men Belong Together So Let's Put A Woman In Between Them So They Don't Look Gay" movie.

Both of the main characters have a sensitivity about them that's rare.…

Love Lies Bleeding 2024
*Saint Maud’s preoccupation with testing the limits of the human body as a form of devotion filtered through the conventions of lusty, pulpy, hyper-violent neo-noir.
It even culminates in what could be seen as a form of ecstasy.
It’s also just a really good time at the movies.
Also, impeccable use of Nona Hendryx’s “Transformation.” Think I’m obligated to love any movie that features that song.
(*= that movie left me cold, but this was so good that I want to revisit/reconsider it)
