  It was... fine? Sure, aesthetically impressive, crazy that they shot this on such a small budget, love looking at Brody in those suits, etc. etc. But as far as epic films about the American nation go, I don't think this had as much to say as people gave me the impression it did. Didn't really have any emotional impact on me. Keeping in mind that this was not a biographical retelling of a real person's life, also simply not weird…

  Is it weird that this movie was made by an old German? Yes. Is the entire movie a romantic fetishization of Japanese culture? Also yes. Was it entirely cliche in its obsession with the analogue and do I think that this movie falls right in line with the current American/European obsession with mindfulness, Hygge life, etc. etc.? Yes. Did I still enjoy watching this? You bet I did.
