Former theater kid, so I gotta go long on this one. Things I enjoyed:

    1. Cynthia Erivo!
    2. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande whenever they sang and harmonized together.
    3. The production design.
    4. The costumes.
    5. The choreography/how they filmed and edited a lot of the dance sequences.
    6. The sound design and orchestration (all the musical numbers sounded great).

Things I didn't love or was confused by:

In terms of depictions of LGBTQ+ relationships in mainstream Japanese cinema, it's a step in the right direction. The two leads are excellent, and while a lot has been made of the graphic nature of the sex scenes, honestly it was also just nice to see sex scenes in which both characters appeared to be really enjoying themselves (kind of a rarity in Japanese cinema outside of "pink" films). But the movie is hamstrung by some really odd editing/cinematography choices…

Intriguing documentary that will be particularly fascinating for anyone who hasn't spent much time in Japan or doesn't have any experience with Japanese elementary schools. I was a bit uneasy, though, with how neat and clean the whole thing ended up feeling--hard to believe that during a year of filming the school didn't have to deal with more serious issues related to bullying, overwork, or COVID-related mental and physical health problems. And maybe it didn't, but I wish the film had delved a little more deeply into some of the very difficult challenges facing Japanese education today.
