I have a lot of thoughts, and not all of them are coherent or fully formed - but I would first like to bring attention to the downright embarrassing 5.6 this film has on IMDb. I went in expecting a total disaster - and instead, I witnessed an infectiously joyful, moving, and subtextually rich retelling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that aims to celebrate the emancipation of the Black community in America and the strength it took to overcome…

    Woman of the Hour

    ★★★

Woman of the Hour is a strange beast, in that parts of it are genuinely on par with the best of cinema today, whereas other parts fail completely to evoke the spirit of the era the story is set in.

As a directorial debut, it’s impressive - I have always liked Anna Kendrick, and seeing a woman direct a film about a vicious serial killer who isn’t sexualized is something that is very commendable. Focusing on the victims and treating the…

Extra half star for Chappell Roan and that incredible duet. The rest of this truly was nonsense and took four tries to get through, hence why we’re in March. I really do not understand this woman’s appeal.

I’m genuinely confused by this movie - partially because of how highly rated it is among friends but also because of how torn I feel about the characters themselves.

What I can say is that this is a methodically crafted and cleverly paced character piece that consistently hits back and forth just like the tennis game it’s centered around. That makes for a very interesting premise, and one that is only bolstered by its downright electrifying use of techno music during…

There's a surprising amount of ideas to unpack here. I find it interesting that only the woman can be hurt in this situation - if this is a metaphor for the male and female relationship, the man is holding the power. He is trusting her not to break away, and yet if she does, he'll just be left with a bow and arrow. If he breaks away, she will die.

Is this painting a picture of the patriarchy?

    Nosferatu

    ★★½

    ★★✩✩✩ - Fair.

To rate Nosferatu on a normal scale feels a bit unfair, considering the era in which it was made as well as its overarching influence. Nevertheless, I must confess that I was bored out of my mind for most of this film. Not only did I detest the heroes of the story, the melodramatic acting served my viewing experience no favors.

Maybe it's because I read the book and already watched the 90s Coppola version. Maybe it's…
