The switching from B&W to color in the same scene was marvelous to look at but I felt it added nothing to the story. Most of the film's technical experimentation was mere formalism.
Overall I think this is rather pretentious.

The innerview is the film equivalent to a 60s psychedelic rock record.
Such a remarkable yet demanding piece of avant-gard film, you'll either love it or hate it. At times inaccessible, it leaves room to many interpretations; among other things, I personally think it deals with the quest for authentic intimacy and personal identity through reconnecting with your inner child, leading to being reborn.
I feel so lucky I had the opportunity to watch in a cinema thanks to Il Cinema Ritrovato.

"The movies make us into voyeurs. We sit in the dark, watching other people's lives. It is the bargain the cinema strikes with us, although most films are too well-behaved to mention it".

I’m old. I read stuff. I see things. I want to tell stories, and there’s no more time. Kurosawa, when he got his Oscar, when George [Lucas] and Steven [Spielberg] gave it to him, he said, “I’m only now beginning to see the possibility of what cinema could be, and it’s too late.”He was 83. At the time, I said, “What does he mean?” Now I know what he means.
