Parasite absolutely blew my mind when I watched it for the first time. I expected one thing but was given something completely different. The inner workings of the respective characters provide immense commentary on the social and class conflicts present in their society. There are hints of comedy and satire in the midst of the thrills, and the clever nature of the secret family blurs the line between wealth and smarts.
La Petite Jerusalem is a prime example of accented cinema. These long, close up shots bring so much focus to the movement of hands in this film, which I noticed immediately. A feeling of intimacy is created through the focus on the hands as they navigate through the complicated love story of Laura and her co worker. Intense haptic visuality is seen through the elegance of these close up shots, sending emotion off the screen and into the mind of the viewer.
Southland Tales may be one of the most confusing movies I have ever seen, and quite possibly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I was utterly confused throughout the duration of the movie as the three stories jaggedly overlapped. I hope that this film was completely and jokingly satirical as this might be the creation that could ruin a director's career. However, I did recognize the satire towards the faults of many aspects of American society that came off as genuinely funny.
24 frames is a stellar representation of abstract cinema in the recent past. While there is no dialogue and no characters, each small story brings its own sense of dramatic effect. The abstract nature of the film does not take away from its ability to convey emotion.
