Dogville 2003
Hated it until I liked it.
Always down for a “good for her”. Also in spite of Lars von Trier’s ignorance there is certainly a lot of interesting allegory on immigration, class, travel voyeurism, and the (im)morality of humanity. But I’m still bored by gratuitous violent misogyny written by men even if it is real and “proving a point”.
Conceptually excellent, produced with style and some nice visuals. Not sure I’d slog through it again but I’ll continue to reflect on it.

The Substance 2024
A movie that contains so much. For me the theme of addiction jumped out strongly, with nods to Requiem for a Dream. The relationship between addiction, self-hatred, capitalism, and misogyny allows these each to have their own storyline in this movie, while being wrapped in a bright flashy package with amazing sound work and acting. And it’s funny! It is a movie that does so much and leaves you feeling physically ill but with a sense of catharsis. The sense of overwhelming sadness but peace at the end, like The Elephant Man. I am excited to rewatch.
