The Sovjet film industry sure serie in the front line of fantasy cinema! This is, I believe, based on a by Lina, which is a kind of heroic folk poetry.

The production design, costumes, photography etc are a marvel! Visual fireworks!! The direction is solid with some lovely imagery. I do think some of the stilted dialogue and vague storyline are a bit of a problem but it doesn’t really damage the film. I think that has to do with the form of the literary predecessor.

This film is such a cinematic joy with its colorful monsters and characters.

I’ve always considered Bava, Fulci and Argento the unholy trinity of Italian horror, but after watching Soavi’s first there films, the trio has to be expandera to a quartet to include the latter!

I think Soavi’s debut STAGEFRIGHT (1987) is one of the best slasher films ever and while his second feature, THE CHURCH (1989), had its problems, it still was a tour de force in atmosphere, scenography and art direction. This leads is to his third film, THE SECT…

One of the truest adaptations of a fairy tale I’ve ever seen. The characters are one dimensional and the intrigue typical. I especially like the fact the dialogue is in rhymed verse.

The cinematography, sets, scenography and costume design are all beautiful to look at and the strongest part of the film. The special effects are charming and the actors are good.

A true fairy tale not only in story but also in form.

Fritz Lang has to be one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema! His wonderful capacity in handling an epic story with such visual fervour and scenographic flair is just unmatched to this day!

The cinematic magic of DIE NIBELUNGEN (1924) is captivating even a hundred years after its making. The special effects are impressive and hold up remarkable well still.

I can’t give this film enough praise. The ability to adapt mythological material or epic heroic poems…
