The most compelling on screen romance since Casablanca as Natasha Richardson and Dennis Quaid shine brightly in this gem
Very rewatchable film that ages well, has great battle scenes and should satisfy most audiences. Some really compelling moments particularly when soldiers interact with each other outside of big set pieces.
Is mainly a film about heroes and sacrifice and as such can feel quite formulaic and does not attempt to delve deeper into its subject matter or explore moral greys.
A film about grief that seems to angle for bittersweet but achieves neither bitter nor sweet. It sits uncomfortably between comedy and drama and shies away from strong emotion and tension build up and catharsis. The vibes are great (the indie coffee shops, the beautiful interiors, Paris, the cool friends) but it seems to be trying to do more and doesn’t pull it off.
Some really detailed/forensic and genuinely refreshing details of life on the western front and back home in Germany, with a great use of sound to convey the terrifying nature of war. Is let down by its hammy/cliched scenes depicting ceasefire discussions. The film loses some of its momentum halfway through and fails to justify its long running time.
