First 30 minutes had me asking “where is this going, what are we doing here” more than once. After that, I really didn’t want it to end. It’s so interesting because on paper, Anora feels like it would be a pretty average dramedy thriller, but what makes it stand out is Sean Baker’s knack for creating interesting compelling and likable characters, a morbid curiosity for what could possibly happen next, and slapstick comedy intermixed with thoughtful writing. Super refreshing to see an original and creative film like this. One which I have no idea where it’s going, and one that takes dramatic hard-left turns every 5-10 minutes. Feels like a Korean film in every way, one that could only come out of the wacky mind of Bong, and in that sense I feel this may alienate some casual movie goers. Although pacing and length are issues, I had a lot of fun with this movie, and the cast clearly did as well.
