An exceptional first half undone by an unevenly paced second half that does more telling than showing.

The rape scene materializes out of thin air and the movie can't recover. The ending that follows is intentionally provocative and stylistically out-of-place. Still, the film's ideas about the immigrant experience, assimilation, and a person's legacy vs. what lies beneath the surface are too interesting to rate this any lower.

It is at once everything I hate about contemporary film and one of the best blockbuster scripts since The Matrix.
Barbie wouldn't have been greenlit if it wasn't tied to pre-existing IP. It wouldn't have been made without go-ahead from parent-company Mattel. Its winking meta-humor seems a daring endeavor until you remember this is Mattel's best marketing opportunity in decades.
