The posing in front of the statues felt like an I Think You Should Leave sketch in the middle of this very fragile, emotional movie. What does that tell me? Maybe that it’s a true observation that people just want to play. Damn traumas keep getting in the way.

Cringe comedy is a complex thing, because it's predicated on an extremely fine balance that if achieved can be glorious. But if it topples, you end up with something like this movie.
It starts out kind of fun, with Albert Brooks' character merely being neurotic. The writing is sharp and genuinely funny as we watch him suddenly contradict himself with confidence, unsure of what to do. It's kind of hilarious watching him spiral. generally ruining his own life.

The reviews are correct: this movie doesn't have enough great jokes, and it cashes in on nostalgia to an alarming extent, but beneath those problems, I'm happy to say, it's still a well made movie! The characters are all important and are given lots of room to have their own little arcs, the pacing is tight, and the writing was only occasionally cringe-worthy.
