Somehow I'd never seen Blue Velvet. I think if I had watched it at 18 it would have changed me. I was changed by it regardless. Incredible to watch a film that has invaded the culture around you in so many specific and strange ways and still be able to find it surprising, hilarious, and profound.

God what a powerful and awfully affecting movie. Makes you feel helpless for being alive in this day and age, deep sympathy for it's man who cannot turn that part of himself off, and rage for the systems that perpetuate these horrors. What an unexpectedly uplifting ending after a long spiral that seems to go only down.
