it’s hard to truly adore a movie where ultimately the central theme is “never trust a woman” but god did I love how stylish this was. how cohesive a story it was able to tell which such a minimal use of dialogue cards. how much of hitchcock’s most iconic elements you can see start to develop here.

"what can greta gerwig possibly have to say about little women that hasn't already been said?" i asked myself, before walking into the theatre and getting blown away by the familiar ache of nostalgic pining. also la gerwig said amy march rights and i respect that.
Underworld 1927

so stylishly paced and very funny. sometimes the flow of silent movies reminds me more of opera than of cinema and this really put that in mind for me. clive brook had such a sharp modern sense to how he expressed himself and moved that I really loved to watch and george is a master of that sort of… vibe of jovial menace. it’s in every great bold look on his face but I think it’s most perfectly summed up near the end when before instigating a chaotic shootout he wearily sits and dips his finger into a bottle of milk to feed a kitten.
