Dreadful. Sleepaway Camp III strips away everything that made the franchise compelling, reducing Angela to a generic psycho killer who just wants to murder. Or—is it subtle genius? If Angela is now fully accepted as female, does her killing stem from a yearning to be othered again? Sleepaway Camp II continues Angela’s search for trans-acceptance, but unlike the original, there’s no mystery—Angela is the killer from the start. There’s nothing to uncover. Instead, she becomes a kind of transphobic avenging angel, enforcing her own rigid morality. Those who indulge in sex or embody an extreme version of masculinity or femininity face her wrath.
The film also leans into self-referential horror, with nods to Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But…
One of the all time greatest films of all time. Exceptional casting that has never been bettered. Joan Cusack on exceptional form.
Yeah. Fine. Over long, very very slow. coulda done with 30 mins cut out of it. Bit self indulgent. Very beautiful to look at, but lacks depth. I really really should be well and truly harrowed by this, and i wasn't. Not bad though.
