Tannest Man In The World Takes Cannes!
Tend to agree with Bazin's assessment that within certain limitations Hitchcock was a technician and storyteller of considerable distinction, but won't go so far as others in bestowing the mantle of genius on him.

I don't have much profound to say about this, likely because I felt the film lacked much profundity. As far as palace intrigue/political dramas go, which I can totally fuck with, this mostly works. Occasionally, a shot really surprises or delights and reminds you you're not just watching an HBO series and I wanted more of those. It's a movie, have some fun!

Lost what little respect I had for my friends who all bailed on this because it's "too long".

This time I noticed: Not one wasted shot. Taut story-telling. Absolutely efficient. At every moment of the film you know what's going on because the shots work perfectly. It's about some tendencies in human commitment and a serious tribute to the idea of giving a shit. Quiet moments where you can see the samurai accept that what they're doing isn't going to benefit them, and will likely kill them. This is what is still stirring. A top 15 film.
