For being 70+ years old this was a surprisingly sympathetic plea for acceptance of cross dressers (using the outdated term "transvetite") and some intersex people (using the outdated term "hermaphrodite"). There's some racist bits and some pretty head scratching sequences that were shoehorned in by the producer. Bela Lugosi's character is never explained and doesn't add anything although there's some sources that claim it was an influence on Eraserhead.
So it turns out trans horror *does* exist, sort of. I certainly didn’t see it from that lens whenever pre-trans me saw this movie for the first time, years ago, which makes me think most cis people don’t see it that way either.
If you're a Hosono nerd you'll love this, but it will also leave you wanting for so much more. It does a good job telling the story from the start up through Hosono House. Then it zips through arguably one of Hosono's richest eras to get to YMO.
