It’s easy to criticise Kore-eda because all of his films are kinda one note, all about finding family when you have none, and the personal tragedy that is born out of hierarchical class structures. But he’s the goat at that and this slaps. Very charming and depressing! Like me.

The Whale 2022
The criticism of this film has focused on the ideology of being fat or obese, or to be ‘fatphobic’. Politics aside, This film is far more interesting than that. Aronovsky invites criticism in the way he utilises farce and overt emotional manipulation to convey his central themes, in this case shame. Grow up! I didn’t cringe during the binge scenes, I felt seen. I cried at the end a little too hard.
