cronenberg saying he found the novel repulsive at first, and eventually managed to make himself attracted to the story once he cast the beautiful actors makes a lot of sense. it’s so obvious he felt he had to tone down his usual style in order to make a ‘repulsive’ story less so. personally i think he should’ve made it freakier.
