This is one film that captured my attention from start to finish.  An exceptional script by Emerald Fennell, so deserving of an Oscar nomination.  Superb performances, memorable characters. A film which leaves a lasting impression.

What I love most about this film is the amazing cinematography by Gregg Toland. Especially the opening sequence which pans across the lower east side of New York city.   Excellent screenplay by Lillian Hellman which shows the dichotomy between the upper and lower class. I can’t help but feel sorry for Humphrey Bogart’s character Baby Face Martin, twice rejected. Billy Halop gives a fine performance as the troubled youngster, Tommy who desperately tries to change his fate.

I am always moved by this film.  Superbly adapted to the screen by George Stevens.  Great performances all around. But it is Alfred Newman’s score that so perfectly creates the mood of this film.
