This is a slow burn. The audience is not afforded much connective tissue between Rubens’ background, the rise of martial law in 1960’s Brazil, and why Rubens is targeted. (The regime not allowing its citizens to listen to Bob Marley, but being completely fine with its college-age students studying abroad, for example, is not explained much less acknowledged). In turn, I didn’t learn much of anything from this marathon of a film.

Really well done. Places you smack dab in summer 2008, which also happened to be my summer before high school, as it was Wang Wang’s. I remember creating my Facebook for the first time. I remember lying about what music I listened to to impress a girl. Dìdi 🉐🉐 makes you remember.
I’ll start by saying that I am giving this a SITUATIONAL 5 star rating. What I mean by that is I think the state of cinema is so bad right now that we are starved for truly great movies. If i saw Oppenheimer in the 1997/1998 golden era of cinema, this would probably fetch 4.5 stars for me. But alas we live in 2023 and most nearly everything is unwatchable.
