The Substance 2024
Kadiring pelikula but not because of the gore. Feeling ko I was SA-ed the whole movie. I will never understand people who hate themselves so much specially because of the lack of validation and idk if there is any other movie that has physically let me experience that extent of obsession. Usually kasi mga ganitong pag prosesong psychological lang ig smart tool ng body horror to explore it like obvs.
Also surprised myself with how much gore I can actually…

a description of toppling casual violence to another, unkind gestures spreading as a virus, slowly elevating into that horrible act. the dark shadowy part of the early frames makes the violence incomplete and soon after, a silhouette: the devil rear mirror with the murderer in the car. the act of violence is complete.

The glass pane between the imagery and the reality it can only approximately point to is breaking slowly into aesthetic debris—permutating reality and reformations—our familiarity with the world integrating and disintegrating at the same time. One can't solidify sensibilities into an actual non-bullshit storytelling as much as Kiarostami did it. It's easy for me now to reflect on how simply happy I am to experience art/life through film.
