A difficult FILM to review beyond "it's pretty and enjoyable" because for all the FILMic interpretations of dreams within dreams, the nightmarish exit to reality proves thee most confusing. Watched with a dog in my lap both times.
At 90 and change it's a goode FILM that doesn't get overly ambitious, but this proves to be a double edged sword; the small scope never really gives the viewer the impression that the spying and smokescreens and setups have larger implications of thousands of lives being at stake. Has that twee Soderbergh sort of ending that ties up everything nicely without its climax getting too messy. Not Oceans 12 level of eyeroll stupidity, but definitely a sigh of disappointment that it was all going to be ok.
The primary hook of this FILM being rare footage and an unearthed John Bonham interview is an interesting premise, but unfortunately this comes off more like a series of music videos than a proper documentary. The FILM explores the humble beginnings of the band, but the narrative never really establishes them as underdogs; any struggles they have (Robert Plant was homeless, Bonham has a family and is a weekend jobber, Page's band breaks up, the grueling touring schedule, etc.) are…
