If I find myself with a couple of hours spare, I'll watch a film.

“You wanna be a diplomat, that's your business. I'm a gangster..."

Peculiar misfire of a movie. Not unwatchable, just a mess.
A Gangster film directed by Barry Levinson (an Oscar winner also with 'Bugsy' within the genre on his CV), written by 'Goodfellas' author Nicholas Pileggi, and starring Robert De Niro should at least be above average. But barely scrapes by as average. Based on real life mafiosi Frank Costello & Vito Genovese, it's all just too familiar. Probably because Costello…

“It's like going into space, but underwater...”

This line is rightly ridiculed when spoken. But however stupid it sounds, there's a ring of truth about it. It's the absolute sort of stupid thing people might say. However in Alex Parkinson's based on fact film (adapted from a documentary he co-directed), I feel it's fairly easy to spot the fictional aspects added to increase the drama. A return to the now gentrified Cabrini Green neighbourhood of Chicago, as the urban legend of the hook-handed killer once again becomes more than just a rumour.
    Really?
Why would the vengeful spirit of a black man murdered by a racist mob suddenly come back to light in the present day?
    Oh, hang on.
Nia DaCosta's brilliantly conceived reboot/sequel should definitely keep the legend alive for years to come. And considering…

About an hour into watching this, I wanted it to end. It would've been a short film with a depressing denouement. But at least it would've been over. Because I could tell there was worse to come. And I was right.
Not for the squeamish, this is a tough film to watch at times. It's not overly graphic in its depictions, it's just that what is depicted is highly unpleasant. And depressingly believable.
Outstandingly acted by all; especially Conrad Khan…
