Mean & nasty & raw as fuck. The thrilling, vitriolic direction injects this would-be scuzzy exploitation trash with a potent dose of urban realism. The action/chase sequences are some of the greatest ever, and the location shooting has that guerilla/verite style to it that make Friedkin’s films so immersive & authentic. There’s even some often-funny comedy!
A hard-nosed, jagged-edged curio of New Hollywood filmmaking.

(Hackman & Scheider should’ve made 20 movies together.)

Well constructed, violent fun. I unfortunately saw every twist/turn coming from 17 miles away, but that only hampered my enjoyment by a little bit. I like how Jack Quaid weaponizes his nice-guy persona here.
I feel like a lot of movies over the last few years are just Black Mirror spec scripts that got bloated into feature length. This one’s not too shabby, but still has some fat, even at just 90-odd minutes.

(This was the last movie I was expecting to see a cop get his face Irreversible’d.)

An over-long melodrama that’s main concern was giving the audience as many scenarios to thirst over Paul Newman as possible. You got manly construction worker Paul Newman! White suit Paul Newman! Army hero Paul Newman! Tuxedo Paul Newman! At one point they really leaned into it and just had him holding a puppy because who the fuck cares about this movie anymore, Paul Newman is HOLDING A PUPPY
