  Astounding. I regret complaining about the lack of Keaton stunts in the first half.

  It's unreal how much of our media is still directly using the style of these movies. Every gag is still used now but was done to great effect in the 20s.

  Fantastic approach to a pretty melodramatic tale. Scorsese approaches it with the same reverence that Newland shows for that cheesy play they watch. Some very interesting choices with the hairlight, iris shots and lighting across the eyes that invoke earlier film and even theater.

  Completely sumptuous in every shot. Immaculate set dressing and costuming. Call me a sucker for a period piece.

  Everything worked for me with Eggers' vision. Lush period styling and the only real color comes from flames. I enjoyed the fleshed out connection between Orlok and Ellen rather than just a vague linking of them. All around great performances.
