A beautiful, intimate journey through the trial and tribulations of one of the most creative, weird, and ambitious rock bands of the last twenty years.
Omar and Cedric tell their stories candidly and aren’t afraid to show their vulnerabilities and faults through the years which gave me an even greater respect for them and their art.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and feel every other emotion in-between.
Recommend for fans of At The Drive-In/The Mars Volta and fans of good rock documentaries in general.
It was a very, very well done movie, just not an enjoyable one. It depicts some extremely dark topics in a subtle way that’s incredibly effective, and the cinematography and sound design are expertly done to achieve the unsettling vibes. This movie is NOT for the casual viewer. It’s very slow, and not much happens, but once you really dissect what’s going on, it’s masterful.
The sum of its parts wind up being greater than the whole. You can tell that it was chopped up to meet the 2 1/2 hour runtime and I’m really curious what they left out on the extended cut. I really believe that it would’ve made an excellent mini-series with how much goes on in the Napoleon story.
EDIT: I’m actually getting more and more frustrated thinking about how this should’ve been a mini-series. So much is left out that’s…
