“Whoo-wee! My fuzzy button feels flappy good! I’ve got a bucketful of goofy fish in my belly!”

Well this caught me off guard. I was expecting a remake of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, but this is something else entirely. It’s technically a sequel, as the Dr. Caligari in this film is the granddaughter of the original Caligari, but the main link between these two films is in their aesthetics. This takes the German expressionist style of the original film…

When I was a really young kid, I remember occasionally sleeping over in my grandparents’ guest bedroom, and I dreaded it. The room had a door to the hallway and another door that opened on a steep stairway that led up to the attic. I remember being scared of the attic - even during the day I hated going up there, and at night just glancing into the darkness up those stairs was the stuff of nightmares. The door to…

An exploration of what it means to be black, as shared by black Americans from different walks of life. It touches on a whole lot, but something I found especially interesting was the examination of problems like misogyny and homophobia among black men in the 70s/80s, and how Riggs traces their roots back to colonialism and racism.

This might be Riggs’ best work, made even more powerful and tragic by the fact that he passed away from AIDS during the…

A fun and goofy movie that often feels like a throwback to the sort of mid-‘00s buddy comedies that I loved back in college, but without all the severely problematic jokes that aged like milk. The last act peters out a bit, but the charisma and chemistry of the Please Don’t Destroy guys mostly makes up for the weak ending.

Far from perfect, but it made me laugh hard and often, which is more than I can say about a lot of comedies. Worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something silly and fun.

Shoot this shit directly into my veins. An actual modern giallo, and not just a pastiche or homage. It's clearly influenced by directors like Argento, Martino, and even DePalma, but it isn't imitating their films in the same way that something like Amer is (nothing wrong with that - it's just a different thing). It's a gorgeous film, and the music (by M83) is stellar. Vanessa Paradis is really great in the lead role.

Gialli were often super misogynistic, so…

Set in Berlin during the Cold War, Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) and their son Bob after some time away on an espionage mission. He finds that she unexpectedly wants a divorce - she is seeing someone else, but there is also something else strange that she won't explain. Although he is upset and angry, Mark gives her custody of their son and their apartment. He drinks himself into oblivion for 3 weeks straight, and…
