Faust 1994
There are times when we cannot help but play the roles set out for us. When we feel no choice but to chase our own destruction, singing and dancing all the way down. We fall into the archetypes of those before us and reinforce them for those yet to come. The snake devours it's own tail.
Šwankmajer's usual strengths come through in his adaptation of Faust: the uncomfortable stop motion, the desolate set design, the depiction of food as both disgusting and strangely sexual. This one is for the real puppetheads out there. Perhaps it's for those a little too into puppets.

Cure 1997
I didnt really get Cure the first time I saw it, but today I was overcome by an urge to rewatch it. This is a great headspace to watch Cure, and I loved every frame of it. The film is delightfully fatalistic, proposing that the only thing keeping society from dissolving into violent madness is that people…

Sorcerer 1977
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I won't lie to you the first 40 minutes of this film are an absolute slog. Truthfully, I think much of it was unnecessary. The audience did not need to know why these 4 guys were exiled in a rural town, that could have been hinted at through dialogue. This would have been much better if it didnt spend so long to set up a fairly straight forward premise.
That being said, once the film actually gets going, it really…

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky 1991
Punching people is so cool. A film which boldly proclaims that if you cant treat every problem as a nail, your hammer isn't big enough. There was an incredible moment during the climax in where Riki punching the warden isn't working. He hears the advice of his ghost uncle saying that if he isn't stronger than his opponent he must outwit them. He then proceeds to punch the warden again but this time it works. True to itself and shockingly violent.
