At least Fellini and Fosse gave Cabiria/Charity an ending that fundamentally affirmed their agency within what limited control they had over their lives.

I've somewhat bristled in the past toward criticism levied at Baker that his work is troublingly anthropological, but I can't argue that this felt studied in a way that does its heroine (or any sex worker, for that matter) any favors. Disappointing!

    ★★½

The result is a postmodern exercise in packaging history as a spectacular singularity, however fearful of pushing its audience to look beyond their own bodies. To that end, Poor Things is a film whose remarkably bold central performance is left to wallow in a secretly feeble movie.

I was let down by Yorgos Lanthimos' visually striking dilution of Alasdair Gray's novel. More of my thoughts can be read here.
