There’s another universe where Paul Schrader adapted this - a story about a man who insists he’s interesting as he reviews pop music and is so indistinguishable that his own lawyers and coworkers don’t recognize him. He joins the blob of people fighting for other men’s respect and adoration, slighting each other with better apartments and business card fonts.  “I just…want…to…fit…..in” Ironically, he fits in so well, no one gives a fuck that he’s a mass murdering monster - how do you care about someone you can’t even see?

I don’t think anything has drummed up such an animalistic sense of terror and dread more effectively than this - just a lean, effective exercise in unbearable tension and mood. I’m also astounded how its world exists so naturally. The movie isn’t about this world or its lore - the film isn’t jumping through hoops to teach us about it or explain things. Theres no “Oh this? This is Mother! She’s responsible for taking care of everything on the ship.” Instead, it’s “Mother wants to speak to you,” and from there we just put it together ourselves.

Can we get back to that?

How many times have we seen it? You’re the chosen one. You are the savior of this world. You are the ONE. We’ve seen so many variations of this that its surpassed being an annoying trope to an assumption - the hero has to learn to believe in themselves. By the third, act whatever parent or sister or brother or dog has died, they’ve repurposed their trauma into a motive to fight with a weapon only they possess.

    Now think…
