This is definitely not Zhang Yimou’s most popular films. However I always find that World Class directors can never make a bad film. Zhang is definitely one of them.
Whoever wrote this story (I think it’s a novel) is just brilliant. There are some bits where the execution could be done better but generally I love it.
The ending is the part that I dislike the most, it was too quick and sharp. I am looking for more context after they leave Nanking. Or maybe just John saying what happens afterwards? For now I do find it quite odd to end so suddenly.
