i’m sorry STEPHANIE HSU???? was the kissing tutorial instructor????
this movie had everything, from its premise of a taiwanese-american kid growing up in 2008 america (very unrelatable) to the dialogue heard around the house & between the family interspersed with a terrifyingly accurate usage of mandarin and english words in each sentence (very incredibly relatable) that made it hit a bit harder. ‘have you eaten’ ‘不用管我了’ and of course the ‘i’ve signed you up for tutoring already and i’ve already paid’…

such a cute lil film 🥹 pulled my emotions in 5 different directions & i also thought it was about to end 5 different times. i love the animation style and how it’s very brushy (??) and very much like a painting & i feel like that added to the impact of it. yes the moral of the story is kind of cliche - of overpowering kindness and found family - but the story that culminated in this meaning was action-packed and powerful and well told that it still hit a spot in my heart

do NOT watch a Japanese movie with Chinese subtitles, my brain simply does not work that fast to process chinese characters at that rate
first Japanese animated movie I’ve seen! the art style is beautiful - especially when they were depicting a sunny day, and everything about it looked so scenic and idyllic. the story was also so cute - I love a cute romance story, especially when it is animated in that cute of a style.
