Held up by some great performances by Denzel and Pascal, great action and awesome corny one-liners, Gladiator 2 manages to be a worthy sequel. It does basically retread the plot of the first one without the emotional punch, and it has some horrible CGI at times. But yes, i was entertained.
The trial definitely manages to capture the absurdity of the original novel, while also showing it in a humorous light. The film is incredibly well shot, and the set design really captures K's small place in a larger scheme. It does end up being more confusing at times than it has to be, and runs on for a bit too long. I can't help but think that it has a weird sense of timelessness, even if it is set in a specific time, it feels like an A24 movie in the best sense of the word.
Some of the shots and editing in this movie is absolutely fantastic and really makes some of the jump scares stand out. And i love the change in the little girls performance. But that is really all i like about this movie, and i do think it starts to fall apart halfway through. Some of the scares are just silly, and it doesn't have the emotional depth that it tries to have, so it kind of ends up being just a solid little horror film that overstays its welcome.
Probs to this movie for actually making Godzilla fucking scary. It's really an achievement that Godzilla minus one manages to make you care for the human characters, which the American movies still haven't achieved. The thing that carries this movie isn't Godzilla himself, but the human characters trying to take him down, because they have actual real stakes in doing so.
