  An admirable if heavy-handed take on the material that needed to be either smarter or scarier or sadder (or maybe just a bit less literal) in order to make its one idea work the way it's supposed to. Some skilfully directed moments and a neat Abbott performance (with general helpings of some impressively gnarly practical make-up effects) keep it from disaster.

  Look, I know that technically nothing here warrants for this to be rated lower than Morbius or Madame Web, but the fact that this time around there was actual talent involved, both in front and behind the camera, and still every single thing about it manages to be deeply, embarrassingly incompetent somehow makes it the worst and most baffling of the bunch for me. Unbelievable that this was projected in movie theaters. Has someone checked in on J.C. Chandor? Is he okay?

  If anything, the early reviews may have undersold how wildly different this is from Fury Road or any other Mad Max film for that matter. It takes someone as confident as Miller to follow up one of the most exhilaratingly paced action films of all time with something so uniquely slow and erratic. Patiently documenting different characters' tactical procedure is not exactly a new lens to explore this world through, but Miller amps it up to a new extreme here…
