Stellar,stellar movie
This is not a light-hearted fun movie. I feel that most people missed this, probably because of Wender's ( and ours), "westerner's gaze" of Japan and it's society.
To me this was a profoundly sad movie. A man tortured by something unknown (most probably traumatic) in his past, finds solace in daily routines and repeated patterns.
The slightest alterations of these patterns have cataclysmic, yet subtly expressed changes in the psyche of Hirayama.
The days are indeed perfect, as long we are confined in our fantasy world,filled with distractions of what's haunting us.
"the answer is understood only by the one who asked the question"
Existential and philosophical searching wrapped in a sci-fi noir aesthetic.
