Maybe a tad too long, but very charming and beautiful photography. Hummingbirds, man!
Went in knowing absolutely zero about the film. No trailer, no premise, maybe saw a few stills. Had a great time. What a movie! Basically a cross between Okja and Snowpiercer, with two wacky Roberts Pattinson. What’s not to like (except for Mark Ruffalo’s trump impression)
almost turned it off when I realized he was going to be saved by the Good Nazi, cheered at the end title that said the Good Nazi died in a Soviet POW camp. good!
Seriously, it was interesting to see this as a companion to The Brutalist, and I’m glad we’ve moved on from the melodramatic trauma porn holocaust movie. Maybe we needed that once; I don’t think we do anymore.
the oscars are don’t matter, and I’m not an expert on anything, but every single review of this movie at least mentions the cinematography, and I don’t see how it didn’t get a nomination in that category. Ross & Fray do something inventive, surprising, and mostly very effective with the camera here.
beyond that, Nickel Boys makes some very interesting choices—some work well, some less so, but it’s all refreshing and the film is overall beautiful and moving
